TOML Tools and Converters
TOML was designed for configuration specifically, aiming to be unambiguous where YAML is flexible. Sections are explicit rather than indentation-based, so a misplaced space cannot silently change the structure, which is why Rust, Python packaging and many Go projects adopted it.
It has first-class date and time types, which JSON lacks entirely. A TOML date is a date, not a string that happens to look like one, and it distinguishes offset date-times from local dates. Converting to JSON turns these into ISO 8601 strings, since that is the only interchange convention available.
The construct that confuses newcomers is the array of tables: a repeated [[section]] header builds a list of objects. It reads oddly at first but produces exactly the nested-list shape configuration usually needs, without indentation carrying the meaning.
